Identify all work required to meet competitive and regulatory needs. Identify the organization roles and resources needed to complete each work item. Highlight areas where people, systems, or processes are not in line with the strategy and identify the source of any issues. Org charts should always be informed by need, not the other way around. Designing an organization to succeed always starts with the desired end result — effectively delivering on a strategy.

In the 18th annual PwC survey of chief executive officers, conducted in 2014, many CEOs anticipated significant disruptions to their businesses during the next five years as a result of global trends. One such trend, cited by 61 percent of the respondents, was heightened competition. The same proportion of respondents foresaw changes in customer behavior creating disruption.
